Exploring West Virginia Cuisine

Pepperoni Roll

A pepperoni roll is a simple baked bread roll filled with slices or sticks of pepperoni, originating from West Virginia, where it's considered the state food; traditionally made with just pepperoni and bread, it's believed to have been created by Italian immigrant coal miners who needed a portable lunch they could eat underground, combining their bread with pepperoni sticks

The pepperoni roll was first sold by Giuseppe "Joseph" Argiro at the Country Club Bakery in Fairmont, West Virginia, in 1927. The rolls originated as a lunch option for the coal miners of north-central West Virginia in the first half of the 20th century.
