Exploring New York Cuisine

New York Cheesecake

New York cheesecake originated in the 1920s when Arnold Reuben, a German-Jewish immigrant, added cream cheese to a classic cheesecake recipe. The result was a rich and creamy cheesecake that became a New York City institution.

Cream cheese was invented in 1872 and made its way into American Jewish cuisine by 1929 according to Arnold Reuben, owner of the namesake restaurant, who claims credit for the recipe (as well as the Reuben sandwich) and is said to have won an award at the 1929 World's Fair in Barcelona. Junior's, established by Harry Rosen in 1950, is another NY Jewish establishment famous for New York-style cheesecake.

Reuben Sandwich

The history of the Reuben sandwich is debated, with competing claims from New York and Omaha

The Reuben sandwich may have originated at Reuben's Restaurant and Deli in New York City in 1914. Owner Arnold Reuben may have created the sandwich for actress Annette Seelos. The sandwich was originally called the Annette Seelos Special. A chef at Reuben's may have created the sandwich for Arnold Reuben's son, Arnold Jr., in the 1930s
